Where is Bayport?

I. Description of Bayport
A. Small thriving seaside town
B. Located on Barmet Bay three miles from the Atlantic
C. Population 50,000
D. Five miles from mouth of Willow River
E. Atlantic coast predominately lined with cliffs and islands. Very few beaches
F. One hour flight from New York City
G. Direction of coast: North and South
H. Haven for criminals. As prominent a town as Baltimore and Boston

II. Location of Bayport
A. Long Island, Suffolk county, New York.
1. Proven
a). Next to the sea
b). Surrounded by many towns
c). Not far from New York City
d). Temperate climate
e). Source: Rand McNally Road Atlas
2. Disproven
a). Bayport, NY is East and West Coastline
b). Population only 7702 in 1990, 9800 in 1970
c). Urban sprawl extends at least 10 miles East.
d). Location allows less than one hour direct flight
e). No reference to Fire Island National Seashore
f). Demographics fit the year 1800.

B. Annapolis, Maryland
1. Proven
a). North and South coast
b). Prominent city on a bay. Prominent to have direct
flights to major cities
c). Population: 33,200. Closer to 50,000
d). Close to one hour flight to New York
2. Disproven
a). Climate not temperate enough. Bay never freezes
b). No reference to the US Naval Academy
c). Location in Chesapeake Bay more than three miles
from the Atlantic
d). Lack of cliffs. Marsh is dominant feature

C. Somewhere in Connecticut
I. Proven
a). Long Island Sound dotted with cities and bay
harbors, and river
mouths
b). Coastline still goes North and South
2. Disproven
a). Cities exceed 50,000 examples: New Haven,
Norwalk.
b). No isolated cities. Just small towns, too small to
be listed in the Rand
MCNally population index
c). Too close to New York City

D. Portsmouth, NH
1. Disproven
a). Next to Maine state line. No reference to Hardys
crossing state lines right
outside of Bayport
E. Portland, Maine
1. Proven
a). Population 63,000. In ballpark of 1959 census of
50,000
b). Located in a bay just three miles from the
Atlantic
c). No reference to Maine being another place (except
for #11, unrevised)
d). Bayports compact image fits Portlands with open
space and small
compact towns with very little land area to grow
e). Frequent references to mansions outside the city
being investigated
Fits description of the wealthy moving to Maine early
twentieth century
f). Bay cold enough to freeze in winter
g). Presence of super highway and off the beaten
path--Shore Road
h). Presence of rocky cliffs, islands, caves, plus a
beach here and there
i) presence of toll roads (Haunted Fort).
2. Objections
a). Population difference of 13,000. Populations
change over the years.
b). Farmland? Mortons hobby only.
